Abakarani b’Inzozi

Abakarani b’Inzozi

On the way to Rwamagana District, I met men carrying heavy loads of bananas from their farms to local markets not only just on their backs, but expertly balanced on bicycles (matabaro). Each man navigated the dusty paths with precision and strength, moving under the morning sun while keeping his precious cargo steady.

These porters, known locally as abakarani, spend their days transporting fruits and vegetables to sustain their families and support the local economy. The work is physically demanding and requires incredible skill, yet they carry each load with quiet determination and pride.

This collection captures their strength, endurance, and dedication. Each painting focuses on their posture, balance, and the dignity in their labor. Through bold colors and contrast, the artworks celebrate the everyday heroes who keep the markets alive, carrying not just goods but also the hopes of their families.
